When we started designing the collapsible BBQ, we decided that it must:

• Be easy to assemble (it can be built by one person in under 60 seconds)
• Be strong and sturdy (it can hold the weight of a man, trust us we tested this)
• Be easy to reload with wood or charcoal (we designed a tool to lift one half of the grill up to reload it, but also designed the handle holes in the sides large enough to put wood or charcoal through)
• Be able to cook small items without them falling through the grill bars (we incorporated a hot plate into the centre of the grill top)
• Flatpack to the smallest possible size but be able to feed the whole family (it packs down to 46cm high x 63.5cm wide x 5.5cm thick but will handle enough burgers and sausages to feed Grandma and Grandad too)
• Stand high enough off the ground as to limit any damage to grass or other surfaces (passed this test too)

The grill plate is made from 6mm thick steel and has a 200mm by 150mm hot plate area for onions, mushrooms etc, and the grill bars have been designed in a triangular pattern for maximum strength, we chose 6mm as at this thickness it will not warp or bend from the heat and will ensure that it will go back together the same time after time. The rest of the components are made from 3mm steel to save on weight without compromising on strength.

Once you have finished cooking and it’s all cooled down, the BBQ packs down as easily as it went up, and the handles in the side become the carry handles to carry it back to the car, and if you cannot clean it straight away fear not as the grill sections are fixed to the inside so there is less risk of the grease getting on your clothes etc.
